The Academic Senate
The primary function of the Academic Senate, which has its foundations in legislation (AB 1725) and Education Code (Title 5), is, as the representative of the faculty, to make recommendations to the administration of a college and to the governing board of (the) district with respect to academic and professional matters (Education Code S53200(b)). Furthermore, Education Code 70902(b)(7)) calls on the Board of Governors to enact regulations to .ensure faculty, staff and students.the right to participate effectively in district and college governance.
This is known as shared Governance. A number of Senators and other faculty members have felt, for a long time, that there is a need for faculty publication to not only keep faculty informed but also to solicit and share views and opinions on meaningful and pertinent issues. It is the intent of the Senate to publish issue oriented, thought provoking and controversial articles in an effort to stimulate faculty responses and views. Our vision is that ultimately it becomes faculty, rather than Academic Senate driven.
This publication is designed to provide a voice for faculty; however, its pages are open to anyone who would like to communicate anything of concern or interest.
The Academic Senate meets regularly on Thursdays from 12:45 to 2:00 pm in Student Services A & B. All meetings are open and the Senate welcomes your input and participation. If you have any concerns you would like to see addressed, please do not hesitate to call Norm Pacula (7407) or any other member of the Senate.
