I would like to have this notice in the Faculty Voice. I want to congratulate the people of the Indian Valley Campus who through their resourcefulness made a bad situation better.
Along with the rest of the United States, the city of Novato planned to commemorate the tragedy of September 11, 2001 by sounding their sirens at 9:55am. Those who wanted to participate were asked to leave their buildings, assemble to recite the Pledge of Allegiance and take a moment of silence to remember those who were affected by this horrible event.
Admissions and Records staff suggested the FlagPole as a meeting place. We went out to find no flag flying.
The students of the Automotive Technology class went into the Auto Tech Lab and put a ladder on top of a table to get our American Flag down. The students carried the flag to the meeting place where approximately twenty faculty, counselors, staff and students all formed a circle and held the flag aloft while we said the Pledge of Allegiance, sang "God Bless America" and had a moment of silence.
I was truly ashamed of the institution for its lack of planning. The people of Novato lost three lives in that tragedy. This institution of higher education failed its own community.
Even McDonald's had a flag flying.
