Issue date: 10/17/03 Section: COM Trustee Candidate Statements

1) Why are you running?

I seek the office of College of Marin Trustee with the firm goal of creating an educational environment that draws community members together in a way that will allow the college to become a truly valuable and respected resource for the entire community, making us all proud.

2) What do you intend to do about the deadlock between the Board of Trustees and the Academic Senate?

Improvement can be made in communications, and I believe I can help in this regard. I am presently a member of the Dixie School Board. This governing board has engendered excellent rapport and communication with all groups with an interest in the School District: parents, teachers, administration, and the community at large. If we are successful in the Dixie School District, we can certainly work towards the same rapport at the College of Marin.

3) What are your thoughts on the "no confidence" vote as to President Middleton and the resulting search for a new president?

It is unfortunate that conditions evolved to the point that the faculty expressed "no confidence" in the president. Certainly, better communication and a policy of collaborative involvement would have prevented this sad state.

The search for a new president is key to the future of the College. The process of seeking out the best-qualified person for this job through a national search has begun. The new president must be prepared to handle the difficult assignment of getting all parties to work in concert for the good of the College.

4) The state of College of Marin facilities at both campuses has been the subject of major debate in the community. Where do you stand on the issue and what do you propose to do about it?

One of my priorities is to address the deteriorating infrastructure and buildings at the College. It is unfortunate that the facilities at the two campuses have been so badly maintained over the last several years. I think the community will support a modest tax once it is convinced that the leadership at the College of Marin is on track.

5) The partnership agreement with San Francisco State has already been approved. What will you do to see it implemented?

The Board has approved a Memorandum of Understanding. Next, we must ensure that when a full partnership is executed it focuses on the programs which will meet the needs of our community. The administration and faculty must implement the partnership. I will work with the governance team to establish the structure, ensure accountability, and provide support as well as community leadership as we move forward.
