College of Marin Cinema League describes the Judy Awards as a combination of the Oscars and MTV Music Awards. The third annual awards is on the horizon, with an evening of food music and film, recognizing the efforts and talents of the College of Marin student filmmakers, screenwriters and actors.
The Judy Awards was named in honor of Judy Gartman, who created and ran the COM Film Department for 27 years. The festivities begin 5 p.m. at the Deer Park Villa, 367 Bolinas Rd in Fairfax on May 30.
Included in the program are the Viewers' Choice awards, which will be selected by the audience at the College of Marin Film Festival, held on May 21 at 5:30 p.m. in Olney Hall.
The reception will be held on the patio as guests arrive for the awards. A buffet dinner will be served and Naima Jazz will provide live music. The cost of tickets is $22 for adults and $12 for children under 12 years of age. The attire is semi-formal.
Categories include best action sequence, funniest film, most gratuitous violence, best intimate moment and favorite film. Achievement awards, including editing, sound, special effects and acting will be selected by a committee.
Merit awards will be selected by the instructors. The categories include special merit, film direction, beginning film, best screenplay, best screenplay outline, and best critical essay.
Other upcoming film events are the fourth annual Music and Movies Night, a combination concert and film fest, and the College of Marin Film Festival. The concert, held on May 1 in Fuselmann Hall, Room 120, is a fundraiser for the Cinema League and will showcase the bands Red Lantern, Attila, Days of Contraband, Thought Crime and Exposure. Films will be shown between the band sets. Doors open for the concert at 6:30 p.m.
