From hanging curve balls to the quickened pace of the 100-yard-dash and pushing the edge of physical endurance in the swimming pool, College of Marin competed in a variety of sports this semester.

The COM baseball team finished the tough season with a disappointing record of 14-20. Some diamonds in the rough were Gabe Perez who batted .380 and smashed six big flies in his Bay Valley Conference All League season.

Pitcher Nick Cruz dealt his way to a 4-2 record, grabbing him an All League honorable mention.

Another pitcher, Tim Warner, impressed North Bay scouts and received a scholarship to Sonoma State. The lowest ERA on the team, 3.5, belonged to Craig Demartini who also achieved an All League honorable mention.

Across the way from the baseball diamond, All American Candidate Bo Wright led the COM men's swimming team in the Bay Valley Conference championship. He placed third in the 200 yard free, sixth in the 100 free and 10th in the 50 free.

Unfortunately, these times were not fast enough to qualify Wright into the community college state championships. Due to budget cuts, the number of qualifiers to the state championships was reduced from 16 to 12 and Wright's times were ranked 13th, 14th and 16th respectively.

The women's team was led by the freshmen Emmelie Nilsson. The lady Mariner placed eighth in the 500 yard free, ninth in the 50 breast and 10th in the 100 breast.

The COM track team was lead by a core of strong athletes competing in a wide variety if events. Nor Cal finalist, Lisa Cox made a strong showing in the pole vault.

Ace sprinter Harold Boxley burned up the track in the 200 and 400 meters. Master of the hurdles Gulliver Perry was a state meet contender in the 110 meter high hurdles and the 400 intermediate hurdles.
