At first glance, and second for that matter, you'd think she was a College of Marin student. Yet this twenty something-looking woman is in fact a COM instructor. Cheryl Goldman teaches physical education and is director of the COM Wellness and Fitness program. "Most people when they first meet her think she is a kid roaming the campus," said colleague and COM physical education instructor Kathleen Smyth, "It is only when you have a conversation with her that you realize the vast intelligence and dedication she has for her craft-being a teacher."
Goldman, who is well-liked and highly revered by her students and peers, has brought to COM a unique "energy and enthusiasm," said Smyth. Diane Kukahiko, colleague and physical education department secretary, said "she is a breath of fresh air for the physical education department; we haven't had anyone like that here for the 15 years that I've been here. Students think very highly of her."
Current student Shelley Jones said "Dr. Goldman has been an inspiration for me since the first day I walked into her classroom." "She's an amazing person and exceptional teacher. I feel truly blessed that I stumbled into Cheryl's life because she has exposed me to the field of wellness and fitness and a new and healthy lifestyle." Another student of Goldman's, Diane Elliott, said "Cheryl puts her whole heart and soul into her teaching." Kristine Mellor, a former student of Goldman's, said "Cheryl is a superb mentor for me to have in my life."
Peers of Goldman are well-impressed, too. "Cheryl is a great role model for all faculty," said Smyth "She is a tireless worker and continuously shows her passion for teaching."
Goldman is the driving force behind the Wellness and Fitness program, which Goldman "single handedly has put together," said Smyth. Goldman hopes to eventually develop an Associates of Arts degree in wellness and fitness at COM.
There are currently three different tracks for the program: educational, personal growth, and professional development. Professional development is the present focus for curriculum development. "She has pursued the Wellness and Fitness program and expanded that to great horizons," says Kukahiko.
