The drama department's silent auction, set up to run hand in hand with the department's production of "Fences" is off and running. The project came to life as a way to raise funds for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. "We're just hoping we can do our part to raise a little money and help these folks." Robin Jackson, department secretary and co-coordinator of the event said.
Intermission on opening night of "Fences" had audience members flocking to the display of items, but unfortunately, most turned out to be spectators only. The number of actual bids remained low through the end of Oct. 3.
"We're hoping we'll have more attention paid to it," Jackson said.
The slow start certainly wasn't due to a lack of items on the table. The wide variety of items included a mystery party hosted at the winner's home, two signed Edie Meidav novels along with the winner's name in her next book, and a party at the Punchline Comedy Club in San Francisco. Also included were two weekend getaways, a varied selection of jewelry and several works of art.
The auction has two more weeks to pick up steam. "We'll announce the winners during the closing performance of 'Fences'," Jackson said. "Fences" will run through Oct. 16.
All proceeds will be handled through the Katrina Relief Fund that was set up by the College of Marin Foundation. For further information on the Katrina Relief fund contact Margaret Elliot at 485-9382.
The auction items can be viewed and bids can be placed in the hallway outside the drama department office whenever the Fine Arts Building is open. For further information contact Robin Jackson at 485-9555.
