UPM ratifies contract
College of Marin administration and a faculty union have broken a labor negotiation stalemate and are close to settling the union's contract.
For nearly 16 months the United Professors of Marin, a union at the COM that represents faculty, had been negotiating a contract with the district. The union ratified a drafted contract on Oct. 18. That places the district in the driver's seat because the next step is for the board of trustees to either accept or reject the contract. The contract will be reviewed at the Nov. 15 board of trustees meeting, COM President Frances White said.
Local 1610 of the UPM had been without a new contract since June 30, 2004. An affiliation of American Federation of Teachers, the union represents about 400 employees on campus, including full-time and part-time credit instructors, councilors, librarians and school nurses at COM.
Not all of the 400 members were present to vote on the contract, but overall the ratification went "pretty smooth," UPM President Ira Lansing said.
Marine lab's safety discussed
A marine biology facility in Bolinas owned by the College of Marin was the subject of a presentation delivered to the board of trustees on Oct. 11.
The laboratory, main house and storage shed at the campus have structural and non-structural seismic deficiencies, which in the event of a major earthquake could suffer ruination, according to preliminary assessment reports.
The interim report was presented at the board of trustees regular meeting held at the Indian Valley campus' library. Swinerton Management and Consulting Inc., COM's Measure C program management and construction management firm, presented the report.
Built in 1914, most buildings on the campus are wood framed. The main house was remodeled in 1964, the same year the water storage tank was constructed. Despite the antiquated facilities, and the COM-financed investigation into the safety of the facilities, the campus is available for use at any time, according to David Ferguson, COM biology lab technician.
