How to catch a communist
September 19, 1947

Can you identify a communist? Dr. Carl Landauer, professor of economics at the University of California, made clear the distinction between communism as a basis of political action and socialism as an economic theory in his talk on how to identify communists and what to do about them. Chances are that the Marin campus is not harboring any communists, but if they are here you can bet the faculty will smell them out quick.

Marin co-eds say 'phooey' to Equal Rights Amendment
February 17, 1950

Two weeks ago the United States Senate passed the Equal Rights Amendment, and unless the women of America act quickly, the House may do likewise. Such an amendment is an outgrowth of an unfair conspiracy against American womanhood. If passed, it will undoubtedly deprive the "weaker" sex of her privileges and prerogatives in exchange for the dubious satisfaction that men and women will be constitutionally equal. "I say 'phooey' to those senators in Washington D.C., and 'double phooey' to their old equal rights bill!" commented Marilyn Slepnol.

Cal has hazing woes
October 19, 1960

The hazing issue reared its head on the other side of the bay during the recent initiation of some 35 freshman girls at the University of California. During initiation activities, co-eds were not allowed to keep their teddy bears. The bears were temporarily given to various fraternities to guard during the two-day initiation. As a result of the incident, and other forms of irritation which required co-eds to sing and perform skits, the dean of students started an investigation.

Iranian Students' Club vandalized
September 12, 1979

On entering their campus meeting place this fall, members of the Iranian Students' Club were greeted by signs declaiming: "Get out of this country!" Carved into a desk was: "Iranians go home!" Valuable dictionaries were missing and papers were scattered everywhere. The president of the club contended that the acts of vandalism were due to racial tensions between Iranian and American students.

An estimated one in 300 U.S. college students are infected with the AIDS virus reported the Centers on Disease Control. The numbers at COM may be even higher as a school in a suburb of San Francisco, the center of the epidemic.
